Planting seeds and growing Oak trees

Developing the organization

.... one skill that a leader needs to learn quickly when getting started is the use of seed planting, you need to be able to sow ideas amongst the team and let them take it from seedling to Oak tree.....

"Men love to wonder, and that is the seed of science". Ralph Waldo Emerson

You must develop a culture where innovation is a way of life, the leader can prepare the environment, implement support/control systems but for a start up company to survive, it needs to be innovative, flexible, and forward looking.

"Basic philosophy, spirit and drive of an organization have far more to do with its relative achievements than do technological or economic resources, organizational structure, innovation and timing." Marvin Bower

The leader needs to direct the growth and focus of innovation in the same way you train trees to grow straight, not constraining too much but just enough to give the proper focus to the company.

"In order to succeed you must fail, so that you know what not to do the next time." Anthony J. D'Angelo

Failure will happen when a company is in fast growth, the goal of the leader is to minimize the impact and always make sure the company learns, make sure people know that failure can happen, and that they do not fear to push ahead because of the possibility of severe consequences. Don't stunt the growth, always remove the dead wood, it loves to hold back the growth.
